What is PDI in pellets?
Pellet quality is expressed as the Pellet Durability Index(PDI) and measured by using a tumbling can device, in which the pellet sample to be tested is first sieved to remove fines, then tumbled in the tumbling can devise for a defined period of time.
Moisture content of pellets is strongly related to their physical properties and for quality products it should be in the range between 10-15 %.
A premium pellet must have less than 8% moisture, but higher quality fuels will have 6.5% or less.
The ash content is the amount of ash that is left after the burn is completed. The level of ash aloud is also set by ENPlus A1 standard. The level is set at <0.7% allowable ash per Kg of pellets burnt, which translates in to a typical household generating 35 Kg of ash for 5 tonnes of pellets burn.
Traditionally, the quality of wood pellets are classified according to their ash residues.
